Keeping a lab running during a pandemic
A brief update regarding how the Neigh lab has been able to maintain progress during the physical isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Highlighting specific tools and strategies for sustaining communication, motivation, and progress.
How to Navigate Career Transitions in Neuroscience
Dr. Neigh presented about the transition between Assistant and Associate Professor and the nuances of changing academic institutions in a Society for Neuroscience panel about career paths in neuroscience. She is the second speaker in the video at the above link.
The Link Between Stress and Autoimmune Disease
Dr. Neigh was interviewed to comment on a new study published by Song et al., in JAMA that discussed the link between manifestation of a stress-related disorder and later onset of an autoimmune disease.
Flipgrid Explorer: Brains
Dr. Neigh and members of the Neigh Lab worked together to create an online video series about the basics of neuroscience on the Flipgrid platform. Dr. Neigh was selected as an 'explorer' for the series run by Flipgrid. Students all over the world could watch the videos and record responses and questions, some of which Dr. Neigh responded to by video message. You can see the original videos and the responses by following the link above. The password is: brains.
Path to Science

Dr. Neigh was featured on a Flipgrid started by the Nature Publishing Group journal called Neuropsychopharmacology. The grid focuses on what you will and won't see when looking at someone's curriculum vitae and provides a glimpse beyond success to the bumps along the way. You can see the grid and Dr. Neigh's video at this link: https://flipgrid.com/11a51b
Public Representation of Scientists

Dr. Neigh was selected by Dove to represent a different aspect of beauty based on her submitted quote, "Real beauty is using what makes you special to make the world more beautiful. I use my scientific abilities to study the brain with the goal of improving mental health." Dr. Neigh agreed to this opportunity because it was a chance to highlight the importance of both research in mental health and the presence of women in science. A copy of her photo and quote appear here. If you'd like to see the full campaign from Dove which features women redefining beauty in a variety of manners, go to the Dove website. To see Dr. Neigh on this page, scroll towards the bottom and select 'see more'. Her photo and quote are in the bottom row of the women featured.

In addition, VCU School of Medicine interviewed Dr. Neigh and featured her involvement in the campaign and information about her background on the internet at this link and in the fall issue of the alumni magazine "12th & Marshall".
Social Media Editor: Neuropsychopharmacology

Dr. Neigh was appointed as the first Social Media Editor for the official journal of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology: Neuropsychopharmacology. Dr. Neigh runs the Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages for the journal. Follow her to get instant updates of new papers as they are accepted and move through the publication process.

Broad Inquiry Project

Dr. Neigh was the featured scientist in March 2017, for the Broad Inquiry Project. The Broad Inquiry Project is a blog that features women who have chosen a career in STEM. If you want to learn more about Dr. Neigh's career path, best moments, hardest moments, and favorite shoes, read her interview here.
Central Virginia Chapter of Society for Neuroscience
Dr. Neigh was elected to the 2017-2018 term as President of the Central Virginia Chapter for the Society for Neuroscience. She will serve as President-elect in the 2016-2017 academic year and will assist the current President, Dr. Greg Valdez of Virginia Tech and the Past-President, Dr. George Bloom of the University of Virginia, with annual meeting preparations and other related initiatives of the chapter.
Community Support
Dr. Neigh, Mandy Bekhbat (graduate student), Rockelle Guthrie (post-bacc student), and Dr. Neigh's family recently took part in the SpeakUp 5K to raise awareness about adolescent depression and anxiety disorders. The Neigh lab participates in community events that are related to research themes in the laboratory. Past events have included the American Heart Association Heart Walk.
The Biology of Aging Gets New Scientific Respect
Dr. Neigh was a speaker during the 2016 Gerosciences Summit hosted by the New York Academy of Sciences. Dr. Neigh discussed her work on stress and HIV and the implications of the interactions between stress and HIV for aging. The summit was featured in a report by the Herald-Tribune.
A full report and recorded talks from the summit are now available on the NYAS website through this link.
High-Fructose Diet Alters Behavior
Work presented by Constance Harrell at this year's Society for Neuroscience conference in Washington D.C. shows how a high-fructose diet may alter behavior and the stress response: "Our results offer new insights into the ways in which diet can alter brain health and may lead to important implications for adolescent nutrition and development," lead author Constance Harrell, a graduate student at Emory, said in a news release.
Natural Immunity Article
Neurobiology of Depression: Spotlight on Inflammation and HIV
Dr. Neigh and Mandy Bekhbat contribute to a recent posting from Natural Immunity, an organization dedicated to education, technology, and a healthy life. In the article, they discuss depression, its interactions with HIV, and the mechanisms by which depression may manifest.
The Atlanta Science Festival
Every year members of the Neigh Lab take to downtown Atlanta to share science with the local community. Previous booths include "Show Me Some Sugar" which teaches about the sugar content in every day foods and the "Sensation Station" which discusses how the brain can be tricked into "phantom" limb sensations.
Interview with Dr. Neigh
Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV Research
Dr. Neigh discusses ongoing research in the lab which focuses on behavioral neuroendocrinology and psychoneuroimmunology within the context of HIV infection. A related article is available here.
Outreach
The Neigh Lab is particularly proud of its level of community involvement. Favorites include participation in the Annual Evansdale Science Night (Evansdale Elementary School, Doraville, Georgia), the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience Learning Library, and the Atlanta Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience. More recently, since relocating to Virginia, Dr. Neigh has provided outreach at Bettie Weaver Elementary School in the Chesterfield County School System.
Children Can Inherit Mom's Abuse-Altered Brain
